One such tradition is the Earth Alms tradition, which is still preserved by the people of East Java. This tradition is a form of gratitude to God Almighty for the harvest, safety, and prosperity He has given.
This was evident in the community of Pandanan Hamlet, Pandanan Village, Duduksampeyan District, Gresik Regency, who today (August 29) held the Earth Alms Cultural Parade in Pandanan Hamlet, Pandanan Village. The event was lively with the participation of all residents, community leaders, and local government officials.
Also present at the event were members of the Duduksampeyan District Military Command (Muspika), including representatives from the Duduksampeyan sub-district government, Tarmuji and Supardi; the Duduksampeyan Police Chief, AKP Hendrawan; and the Duduksampeyan Military District Commander, Captain Inf. Prayit Handoko, Head of Pandanan Village, Suryadi, S.Sos., who is also the Chair of the PKDI (Indonesian Community Empowerment Association) in Duduksampeyan District; Head of Pandanan Hamlet, Ali, as well as village officials, Public Order Agency (Satpol PP), RT/RW (Neighborhood Association) heads, the organizing committee, and thousands of enthusiastic residents enlivened the event.
A Meaningful Series of Events
The event began with remarks from village leaders, followed by a procession of Gunungan Tumpeng (cone-shaped rice cones) displaying agricultural produce brought by representatives from RT 01 to RT 04. One unique mountain was even decorated with banknotes ranging from Rp 2,000 to Rp 20,000, which were immediately sought after by residents, adding to the festive atmosphere.
Each RT also showcased its creativity through traditional clothing, traditional dances, and even harvests packaged in cultural creations. The enthusiasm of the residents was further heightened when one of the community leaders, Bang Fidin—known as a coal entrepreneur and brother of the Pandanan Village Head—shared his good fortune by giving tens of millions of rupiah in cash to participants and the community as a token of gratitude for the abundant blessings he had received.
The culmination of the event was marked by the cutting of the tumpeng (rice cone) and a communal prayer, reflecting gratitude and strengthening the community’s sense of togetherness. In the evening, the event became even more lively with a shadow puppet performance by Giri Laraz, featuring puppeteer Ki Budi Prayitno, featuring the singer Ika Remfoong, and various other folk entertainment.
Messages and Hopes from Village Leaders
In his remarks, Pandanan Village Head Suryadi, S.Sos., expressed his appreciation to all the community members who contributed to the success of the event.
“Thank you to all the people of Pandanan Hamlet for their participation and support, both in terms of energy, thought, and material. This tradition is an expression of our gratitude to Allah SWT and an invitation to continue giving alms. May it be a blessing for us all,” he said.
He also emphasized the importance of preserving the Sedekah Bumi tradition as part of the nation’s cultural identity.
“Sedekah Bumi is not just a ritual, but also a communal prayer for the community to be blessed with safety, abundant harvests, and a prosperous life. May this tradition continue to be preserved from generation to generation,” he added.
Similarly, Pandanan Hamlet Head Ali urged the entire community to maintain unity and the value of mutual cooperation.
“Let’s maintain this togetherness. With a spirit of harmony and togetherness, we can achieve progress and prosperity for Pandanan Hamlet,” he said.
Meanwhile, community leader Bang Fidin also expressed his hope that this tradition will continue to be carried out from generation to generation.
“May Sedekah Bumi continue to be a unifying force for the Pandanan community, bringing blessings to us all,” he said.
Symbol of Local Wisdom
The Sedekah Bumi Cultural Parade in Pandanan Hamlet is not just an annual event, but also a symbol of local wisdom that teaches the values of gratitude, togetherness, and respect for ancestors. This tradition strengthens community unity while enriching Indonesia’s cultural heritage.
With joy, the people of Pandanan Hamlet demonstrate that cultural heritage is not just a story of the past, but rather a national identity that must be preserved, cared for, and passed on to future generations.
